The Venetian Tradition of Befana

The Regatta delle Befane is an annual rowing race that takes place in Venice, Italy on the Epiphany (January 6th). The race is named after the Befana, a traditional Italian holiday figure similar to Santa Claus.

Participants in the Regatta delle Befane dress up as the Befana, donning colorful robes and pointy hats as they row through the canals of Venice. The race is a lively and festive event that draws both locals and tourists alike.

In addition to the rowing competition, the Regatta delle Befane also features a parade through the streets of Venice, with participants and spectators alike dressed in Befana costumes. The parade culminates in a grand finale at the Piazza San Marco, where the Befana is crowned the winner of the race.

The Regatta delle Befane is a beloved tradition in Venice and a unique way to celebrate the Epiphany. Whether you’re a seasoned rower or just want to take in the sights and sounds of the event, the Regatta delle Befane is a must-see for anyone visiting Venice in early January.
