What do Nintendo and the Eiffel Tower Have in Common?

It’s hard to believe that two iconic institutions like Nintendo and the Eiffel Tower were both founded in the same year, but it’s true! Nintendo was founded in 1889, the same year that the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris, France.

The company was founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi, who originally started Nintendo as a playing card company. At the time, playing cards were a popular form of entertainment in Japan, and Nintendo’s cards, known as Hanafuda, quickly gained popularity.

While the Eiffel Tower was being built, Nintendo was just getting started in the playing card business. However, the company would go on to become much more than just a playing card manufacturer.

Over the years, Nintendo has diversified its products and services, branching out into video games, electronics, and even theme parks. Today, Nintendo is known around the world for its iconic video game franchises, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon.

Despite being founded in the same year, the Eiffel Tower and Nintendo have taken very different paths over the past 134 years.
