…which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

Liechtenstein, a small, landlocked country nestled between Switzerland and Austria, has had the unfortunate experience of being accidentally invaded by its neighbor, Switzerland, on multiple occasions.

The first accidental invasion occurred in March 2007, when a group of Swiss soldiers on a training exercise mistakenly crossed the border into Liechtenstein. The soldiers, who were reportedly following a faulty map, didn’t realize they had entered Liechtenstein until they were stopped by Liechtenstein border guards.

The incident caused a diplomatic row between the two countries, with Liechtenstein demanding an apology and Switzerland expressing regret for the mistake. The Swiss military eventually apologized and the situation was resolved peacefully.

But Liechtenstein’s woes with accidental invasions by Switzerland didn’t end there. In 2011, a group of Swiss military helicopters conducting a training exercise once again crossed into Liechtenstein’s airspace, causing the tiny country to lodge a formal complaint with the Swiss government.

These accidental invasions have understandably caused some tension between Liechtenstein and Switzerland, but the two countries have always been able to resolve the issues peacefully and maintain good relations. In fact, the two countries have a long history of cooperation, with Switzerland even serving as a protector of Liechtenstein’s sovereignty.

Despite the occasional mishap, it’s clear that Switzerland and Liechtenstein value their close relationship and will do their best to avoid any future accidental invasions.
